Brassai- Artist Research"Photography must suggest, not insist or explain"
George Brassai (1899-1984) was a Hungarian photographer as well as a filmmaker and sculptor, who became well known for his macro surrealist photography and work in Paris. Brassai's surrealist close-up style photographs are of many different things. For example water on a leaf, a bacon shaving and a ticket stub. The distinctive features of this style are that they are all black and white, and it's hard to tell what they have been taken of, as they are very very macro. I think by his work, he is trying to say that everything has so much intricate detail in it that we don't see, and everything is special and has been specifically made for a purpose, even though we don't see it a lot of the time. Brassai's work has influenced me greatly in this mini-project. I decided to focus on some of the textures in the photos as well as other things, like the wood and metal. This idea was taken from the leafs texture, in his photo of water on the leaf. My Replication |
